Therapy at Befriend Your Brain is collaborative, thoughtfully paced, and shaped around your needs and goals. Our clinicians support children (6+), teenagers, and adults, and work alongside parents and caregivers where that’s helpful. Depending on what suits you, our work draws on Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, as well as structured programs such as the Westmead Feelings Program, the Resourceful Adolescent Program, and the Cool Kids Anxiety Program. Our team adapts how therapy is delivered to fit the way you learn and communicate, using visuals, worked examples, written summaries, and other concrete tools where they help.

What to expect

01

Getting to know you.

Our first appointment is a chance to understand what brought you to therapy, what has helped or hasn’t before, and what you’re hoping for, even if that’s still unclear.

02

Planning together.

From there, we shape a plan that fits you, including the pace, the focus, and how we’ll work. You don’t need to arrive with clear goals.

03

Reviewing as we go.

We check in on how things are working and adjust as your needs change.

For children and teens, our clinicians tend to work alongside parents and caregivers, school supports, other allied health professionals, and other relevant stakeholders throughout, with the young person’s preferences and consent guiding what we share and with whom.

How sessions work

Your first appointment is 1 hour 15 minutes, so we have time to understand what brought you to Befriend Your Brain and begin planning together. Ongoing sessions are 50 minutes. Sessions are generally held by telehealth (Zoom) across Australia and are flexible in structure, so we can adapt the pace, format, and frequency to you.

For younger children, I generally suggest in-person appointments. Limited in-person sessions are available in Q4 of 2026, with increasing availability in early 2027.

Fees and funding

Initial appointment$3901 hour 15 minutes
Ongoing sessions$26050 minutes

Sessions are $260 for 50 minutes. For the longer initial appointment (1 hour 15 minutes), the fee is proportionally the same: $390.

Medicare

A Mental Health Care Plan is welcome but not required. If you have a referral from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician, you can claim a partial Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year, currently $149.05 per session for sessions with a Clinical Psychologist (from 1 July 2026). That leaves an out-of-pocket cost of $110.95 for a standard session, or $240.95 for your first appointment. If you don’t have a referral, you’re welcome to attend as a private client.

Medicare may also contribute to therapy for eligible children and young people with a complex neurodevelopmental condition following a referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Eligibility criteria apply, so please discuss this with your referrer.

NDIS (self-managed)

I work with self-managed NDIS participants who have goals to build capacity in areas such as emotional understanding, emotional awareness, emotion regulation, social communication, and social skills. I have experience providing NDIS capacity-building support, and I understand how confusing and uncertain the ever-changing NDIS landscape can be for families. I’m happy to talk through how psychology currently fits within the NDIS framework in our first session.

Unfortunately, I’m unable to see plan-managed or NDIA-managed participants at this time.

Private

Private clients are welcome, and some private health insurers may cover sessions, depending on your level of cover.

Fees, rebates, and funding rules can change. Current arrangements will be confirmed before your first appointment.
